I'm an M.A. student in Digital Humanities at McGill researching how language data can be used to study human culture, supervised by Prof. Andrew Piper. My dinner party description of what I do is "using AI to study storytelling". This is important for better understanding...
- Human culture: We have more data than ever before on all the rich variations and patterns of human life - but to use this resource to understand ourselves better, we need frameworks to empirically test cultural theories meaningfully with computational tools. A lot of my work involves developing/applying these frameworks!
- How computers "think": Comparing human and language model outputs on culturally grounded tasks can teach us a lot about model behavior. So through using AI to study culture, we learn a lot about AI too!
